The outdoor aviaries were built in the ’80 and ’90; they are located on the experimental fields, behind the CEFE building, on the CNRS campus in Montpellier. There are 24 large aviaries (27 m3), each built around a natural tree offering lots of hides and perching. An ALGECO container is also used for behavioral testing. Birds housed in the aviaries are manipulated by scientists and technicians with the appropriate permit (certificate of capacity for the rearing of non-domestic species).
In 2027, six of the 24 aviaries will be replaced by a new ensemble of 16 modernised aviaries.
